An in-ground sprinkler system is one of those upgrades homeowners either love or regret — and the difference almost always comes down to how carefully the system was designed, not how much was spent. A properly zoned system with a smart controller can cut water bills 20–40% versus hand-watering while keeping the lawn healthier; a poorly zoned one wastes water, drowns some areas, and starves others.

Zones, heads, and why design matters
A "zone" is a group of heads on one valve. The rule that separates good systems from bad: never mix head types on a zone. Rotors (15–40 ft throw) apply water much more slowly than spray heads (4–15 ft). If you mix them, either the rotor areas stay dry or spray areas flood — no run-time satisfies both.

Get at least three quotes and confirm each includes: zone count, head count and type, controller model, backflow preventer, permit, and warranty terms. A quote significantly cheaper than the others usually has fewer zones or cheaper heads — both cost more to correct later than to specify up front.

The most expensive sprinkler mistakes aren't in the install — they're in the design. Watch for: putting turf zones and drip zones on the same controller station (they need completely different run-times), running a single zone across full-sun and full-shade areas (evaporation rates differ 2–3×), and skipping a rain sensor or smart controller to save $150 (which then wastes $200+/year in unnecessary watering).
