Sources & Methodology
Data updated July 2026Every estimate on this page blends three data sources, then adjusts for your ZIP code.
- Material & project baselines — curated from HomeAdvisor / Angi True Cost Guide, Fixr, and Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value Report. Reviewed quarterly.
- Labor rates — U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (May 2024 release), by trade, with standard contractor markup.
- Regional multiplier — ZIP3-based, derived from BLS metro wage differentials and materials-cost indices. Ranges roughly 0.82× (lowest-cost rural markets) to 1.55× (highest-cost coastal metros).
Estimates are for planning only; real contractor bids for the same scope typically spread 15–30%. Read our full methodology for the exact formula, contingency guidance, and what's not included.
How much does gutter installation cost?
Installing new gutters in 2025 costs $8–$25 per linear foot installed. A typical single-story ranch home with ~150 lf of gutter runs $1,200–$3,000 for standard aluminum. Copper and steel push $18–$50/lf. Our calculator estimates by linear footage, material, downspout count, and ZIP-adjusted labor.
Cost by material
- Vinyl — $4–$8/lf. Cheapest, brittle in cold, best for DIY sheds.
- Aluminum seamless — $8–$14/lf. Most common residential choice.
- Steel galvanized — $10–$17/lf. Stronger, rusts if scratched.
- Copper — $25–$45/lf. Premium look, 50+ year life, patinas over time.
- Zinc — $22–$40/lf. Similar to copper, self-healing scratches.
Seamless aluminum is 95% of new installs. It's made on-site with a portable brake — meaning no seams between joints except at corners and downspouts.
Cost breakdown
- Gutter material — 35–45%.
- Labor — 30–40%. Faster on single-story with straight runs, slower on multi-story and complex rooflines.
- Downspouts — $8–$15 per lf each; typically one downspout per 25–35 lf of gutter.
- Hangers, end caps, elbows, corners — 5–10%.
- Fascia repair (if needed) — variable.
How to use the calculator
Enter total linear feet of gutter needed (roughly the perimeter of the roof drip edge), material, gutter size (5" or 6"), number of downspouts, and story count. Include ZIP for regional labor adjustment.
Gutter size — 5" or 6"?
Standard is 5" K-style. 6" is worth upgrading when:
- Your roof pitch is steep (water hits the gutter fast)
- Your roof surface is over 2,000 sq ft draining to one gutter run
- You have heavy oak or pine trees dropping debris
- You live in a heavy-rain area (Pacific NW, Gulf Coast, Southeast)
Cost adder: 6" runs about $1–$2/lf more. Worth it for most 2-story homes.
Downspout placement matters
- One downspout per 25–35 lf of gutter. Overloading causes overflow.
- Extend at least 4 ft from foundation. Ideally into a splash block or drain.
- Consider tying into buried drainage (French drain, dry well, or storm sewer) — $500–$2,000 add-on but eliminates foundation water issues.
Gutter guards — worth it?
Gutter guards add $5–$15/lf to the install. Types:
- Mesh screens — Cheapest; small debris still gets through.
- Reverse curve (Leaf Guard, Gutter Helmet) — Water hugs curve, debris falls off; $10–$20/lf. Best in oak-heavy yards.
- Micro-mesh (MasterShield, Raptor) — Stops even pine needles; $10–$18/lf. Best all-around.
- Foam inserts — Cheapest; usually a mistake, mold-prone.
Payback is real if you'd otherwise clean gutters 3–4 times/year or pay $150–$300 per cleaning. Gutter guards eliminate 90–95% of that.
DIY vs. hire
Sectional aluminum (from Home Depot/Lowe's) is DIYable but seams leak within a year or two. Seamless requires the portable brake — always hired. Vinyl DIY is realistic for detached garages and low porches only.
Total DIY savings on a $2,000 job: $700–$900, but you gain seams (bad), warranty gaps, and 1–2 weekends of labor.
Signs you need replacement, not repair
- Sagging or pulling away from fascia
- Rust-through on steel
- Water behind gutter (splashes on siding during rain)
- Multiple failed sealing attempts at seams
- Fascia rot behind gutter — must be fixed before replacement
Fascia and soffit — inspect before installing
Never install new gutters over rotted fascia. Signs of trouble:
- Soft spots when you push a screwdriver
- Peeling paint patches
- Visible water staining below the drip edge
- Insect activity
Fascia replacement runs $8–$20/lf. Bundle it with the gutter install for combined labor savings.
Common gutter mistakes
- Inadequate slope. Gutters need 1/4" fall per 10 feet toward downspout.
- Hangers too far apart. 24" spacing is standard; 18" in snow/ice areas.
- Wrong downspout size. 2×3 is common but 3×4 handles far more water — use for 6" gutters.
- Missing gutter apron. Water can wick behind gutter and rot the fascia.
- No ice dam protection in cold climates. Heat cable or self-adhered underlayment prevents ice backup.
Regional considerations
- Snow/ice climates: Heavier gauge, closer hangers, snow guards on metal roofs.
- Hurricane zones: Wind-rated hangers; some jurisdictions require them by code.
- Heavy rain zones: 6" gutters and larger downspouts standard.
- Dry climates: Standard 5" is fine, but bury downspouts to protect landscaping.
Save without sacrificing quality
- Bundle with roof replacement. Contractor is already there; save on setup.
- Ask about "second-story surcharge." Some installers charge 25–40% more for anything above 12 feet.
- Skip gutter guards on low-debris areas. North-facing gutters with no overhanging trees rarely need them.
- Get the fascia inspected during quote. Surprise fascia work mid-install can double the day rate.
- Off-season timing. Late fall through winter is slow; 5–15% discounts common.
Bottom line
Get at least three itemized quotes, verify licensing and insurance, and prioritize install quality over brand. The install crew matters more than the box on the truck — a mid-tier product installed well outperforms a premium product installed poorly. Use the calculator above to set your budget expectations, then negotiate from an informed position.
Savings Tips
- ✓Choose seamless aluminum gutters — best cost/durability balance for 95% of homes.
- ✓Install gutter guards up front to avoid $150–$300 annual cleaning costs.
- ✓Bundle gutter work with roof replacement to save on scaffolding and labor.
- ✓Copper looks great but costs 3–4x aluminum; reserve for accent sections.
